2015 US News Best Colleges Rankings Released!
The 2015 US News & World Report “Best Colleges” rankings have been released! Scroll down to see a partial list of the top American National Universities and Liberal Arts Colleges.
The US News & World Report is a news magazine that has operated from Washington, D. C. since 1933, but it is most well-known for its annual “Best Colleges” report, first published in 1983. The report is widely-accepted as the oldest and best-known ranking system for American high-education academic institutions today.
The rankings are based on data that US News collects from each educational institution, either from annual surveys sent to each school, or from the school's website. They are also based on peer surveys of university faculty members and administrators who do not belong to the schools.
Three of the data points that are truly significant in calculating the US News college rankings are an institution’s average class size, its first-year retention rates (how many students continue from freshman to sophomore year), and the percentages of students who graduate within 6 years.
The rankings also measure a school’s allocated funding or wealth, as well as its popularity, as based on peer assessment. However, the class size, first-year retention rates and 6-year graduation rates are the data points that truly comment on the quality of a school’s undergraduate experience. As students and parents look through the rankings, they should regard these numbers as barometers of the school’s ability to help students graduate and cultivate a great undergraduate experience.
Families should also be sure to consult other categories from US News, such as “Best Undergraduate Teaching” and “Top Public Schools.” Other recommended American college rankings are conducted annually by Forbes and The Princeton Review. We especially recommend The Princeton Review’s “Happiest Students” ranking, and the National Science Foundation’s ranking of top schools that send students to science and engineering doctorate programs.
While rankings are a great way to capture objective facts and comparisons of different colleges, families should note that schools that occupy similar spaces in a ranking can have vastly different educational experiences or cultural environments. The best fit school for a student isn’t necessarily the one that claims the highest spot on the list. Students are strongly encouraged to speak to admissions officers, current students, recent alumni and college counseling professionals to understand more about the subjective experience at a school.
